damage to concrete

Reading time:

Concrete is a material made up of various aggregates and cement. Concrete is used to coat steel reinforcement, thus providing it with its mechanical strength.

This reinforcement will only corrode after the concrete coating has deteriorated (photo 5), iron being immune in its concrete environment (pH 11.6, ORP = + 100 mV). Preventing deterioration must start with the concrete except in the case of pre-stressed concrete where high stress levels and the fine nature of the reinforcement will more frequently expose reinforcement to stress weakening and to chemical corrosion as the result of water infiltration. Concrete deterioration begins by going through a mechanical phase followed by a chemical phase.
