chemical analysis

Reading time:

Analysis can be used to predict as well as detect water corrosivity.

Measurements of the chemical species that determine water corrosivity (especially pH, M-alk, Ca, Mg, PO4, C, SO4) and, if used, amounts of corrosion inhibitor, can be used to calculate indexes, such as the Langelier and Ryznar indexes, that are capable of predicting rates of corrosion.

Similarly, the analysis of corrosion products in water can provide information on corrosion intensity. The most useful method consists in analysing dissolved and suspended iron (steel corrosion), copper from copper alloys (warning: copper can redeposit itself on steel surfaces or on the surface of corrosion products should these exist).
